FAQ

01. Legality & Compliance

Is it legal to carry this knife in my area?

Knife laws vary significantly by country, state, province, and even city. Iron Ethos sells knives legally manufactured for lawful ownership and use — but it is entirely your responsibility to verify local regulations before purchasing, carrying, or transporting any blade.

As a general reference for the United States:

· Most states permit folding knives with blades under 3–4 inches for everyday carry
· Fixed blades are subject to stricter rules in many jurisdictions
· Some cities (including New York City and Chicago) have blade length limits as low as 2 inches
· Always check your state statute and any applicable city ordinance

We strongly recommend cross-referencing both state and local law before making a purchase.

Are assisted-opening or locking mechanisms legal in my state?

Assisted-opening knives (spring-assisted, thumb stud, flipper) are legal in most U.S. states but are treated as switchblades or prohibited weapons in a handful of jurisdictions, including certain areas of California, Massachusetts, and Hawaii. Gravity knives are specifically restricted in New York.

Locking mechanisms (liner lock, frame lock, axis-style lock) are generally not subject to separate legal restrictions — but always verify with your local laws.

If you are unsure whether a specific model is legal in your area, contact us at info@iron-ethos.com before ordering and we'll help you find the right answer.

Which countries and regions do you ship to?

We ship worldwide. However, some products may be restricted or prohibited from import in certain countries due to blade length limits, locking mechanism restrictions, or national import laws.

It is the buyer's sole responsibility to confirm that the ordered item is legal to import and own in their destination country. Orders that are seized or held by customs due to local regulations are not eligible for refund or reship at Iron Ethos's expense.

If you have questions about a specific destination, email us at info@iron-ethos.com before placing your order.

02. Selection & Materials

I'm new to EDC knives. What size should I start with?

For most first-time EDC buyers, a folding knife with a 2.75–3.25 inch blade is the practical starting point. It clears legal limits in most U.S. jurisdictions, fits a front pocket without printing, and handles the majority of daily tasks without feeling excessive.

If you're primarily carrying in a work environment (outdoors, construction, trade), a 3.5–4 inch blade may serve you better. For pure urban carry, lean smaller.

When in doubt, email us and describe how you plan to use it — we'll point you in the right direction.

What's the difference between the steel types you use?

Steel choice affects edge retention, corrosion resistance, and how easy a blade is to sharpen. Here's a plain-language breakdown of what we use:

14C28N

Character: High corrosion resistance, easy to sharpen, holds a solid working edge

Best For: Everyday use, wet environments, first EDC blade

Nitro-V

Character: Similar to 14C28N with slightly better wear resistance; excellent rust resistance

Best For: Coastal carry, humid climates, general EDC

Nanocorr

Character: Proprietary corrosion-resistant alloy; exceptional rust protection with a refined edge

Best For: Marine environments, hard daily use

S35VN

Character: Premium stainless tool steel; strong edge retention, tough, harder to sharpen at home

Best For: Performance-focused carry, experienced users

All steels we select are appropriate for daily carry. The "best" steel is the one that matches how you'll actually use and maintain the knife.

Should I carry a folding knife or a fixed blade?

Folding knife: Compact, pocket-friendly, legal in more jurisdictions. Better for urban EDC, light daily tasks, and situations where discretion matters. Requires a functional locking mechanism for safe use.

Fixed blade: More structurally rigid, faster to deploy, easier to clean. Better for outdoor, field, or work environments. Typically requires a sheath and draws more attention in urban settings.

Most Iron Ethos customers carry a folder. If you're unsure, start there.

03. Use & Operation

Can I use my knife as a pry bar or screwdriver?

No. Knives are cutting tools. Using a blade tip as a screwdriver or pry point is the fastest way to snap the tip, damage the edge geometry, or stress the pivot beyond its design limits. None of that damage is covered under warranty.

For prying, use a pry bar. For screws, use a screwdriver. Carry the right tool for the job — that's the EDC mindset.

04. Maintenance & Care

How do I sharpen my blade correctly?

For field touch-ups: a ceramic rod or pocket sharpener at the blade's factory bevel angle (typically 17–20° per side for our knives) will restore a working edge in minutes.

For a full re-edge: use a whetstone (400–1000 grit to reset the bevel, 2000–3000 grit to refine, leather strop to finish). Maintain a consistent angle throughout. If you're new to freehand sharpening, a guided angle system (Edge Pro, KME, Lansky) produces more consistent results.

We do not recommend power grinders or belt sanders for home use — the heat generated can damage the steel's temper.

My knife got wet or dirty. How do I clean it?

For general cleaning:

  • Open the blade fully and lock it
  • Rinse under warm water, or wipe down with a damp cloth
  • Use a soft brush (old toothbrush) to clear debris from the pivot area and around the handle scales
  • Dry completely with a cloth, then leave open in a low-humidity area for 15–20 minutes
  • Apply a small drop of pivot oil before closing and storing

After saltwater or heavy chemical exposure: Rinse thoroughly, disassemble if possible, dry completely, and re-oil all metal contact points before reassembly.

Avoid submerging handles in water for extended periods — this applies especially to G-10 and carbon fiber, where moisture can work into internal gaps over time.

My blade is dull. Can I send it back to you for sharpening?

Yes. We offer sharpening service for Iron Ethos knives. To initiate a service request:

  1. Email info@iron-ethos.com with your order number and a brief description of the blade's condition
  2. We will confirm the service and provide a return shipping address
  3. Ship the knife safely packaged — blade wrapped, box padded
  4. We will sharpen, inspect, and return the knife within 5–7 business days of receipt

Sharpening service fees and return shipping costs will be confirmed by email before you ship. Please do not send knives without prior confirmation.

05. Orders & Shipping

How long does it take to process and ship my order?

All orders are processed within 1–3 business days of payment confirmation. During high-volume periods (product launches, holidays), processing may extend to 5 business days.

Once dispatched, you'll receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking number.

Estimated transit times from dispatch:

  • Standard International: 8–15 business days
  • Express (DHL / FedEx): 5–8 business days

These are estimates. Carrier delays and customs processing can affect delivery windows, particularly for international shipments.

My knife arrived damaged or defective. What do I do?

Inspect your order as soon as it arrives. If you receive a blade that is damaged in transit or has a manufacturing defect, contact us within 7 days of delivery at info@iron-ethos.com with:

  • Your order number
  • A clear photo of the damage or defect

We will arrange a replacement or full refund — your choice. Damaged items do not need to be returned before we process a resolution; photos are sufficient for most cases.

What if I change my mind and want to return the knife?

We accept returns on unused, unmodified knives in original condition within 30 days of delivery.

To initiate a return, email info@iron-ethos.com with your order number and reason for return. We'll respond within 1 business day with instructions. Do not ship items back without prior authorization.

Return shipping is at the customer's expense unless the return is due to a defect or our error. Knives that show signs of use, sharpening, or modification are not eligible for return.

Full refunds are processed to your original payment method within 5–7 business days of receiving the returned item.

Can I cancel my order after placing it?

Orders can be cancelled if they haven't yet been dispatched. Email info@iron-ethos.com as soon as possible with your order number. If the order has already shipped, you'll need to follow the standard return process once it arrives.

For pre-orders: You may cancel a pre-order at any time before the order is fulfilled. Contact us by email and we will issue a full refund within 5–7 business days.

06. Warranty & After-Sales

What warranty do Iron Ethos knives come with?

All Iron Ethos knives are covered by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects for the original purchaser. This means if something fails due to how it was made — not how it was used — we'll fix or replace it.

Warranty coverage is non-transferable and applies to the original buyer only.

What does the warranty cover?

Covered:

  • Blade cracking or fracturing under normal use conditions
  • Lock mechanism failure under normal operating force
  • Pivot failure or blade play that develops without user modification
  • Spring breakage in assisted-opening mechanisms (under normal use)
  • Handle hardware defects (loose screws from the factory, scale delamination)

Not covered:

  • Damage from misuse (prying, chopping, throwing, impact against hard surfaces)
  • Chipped or rolled edges from improper sharpening or hard contact
  • Corrosion resulting from neglect or failure to maintain
  • Normal wear: scratches, anodizing wear, pivot smoothing over time
  • Lost screws, clips, or hardware after purchase
  • Modifications made by anyone other than Iron Ethos

If you're unsure whether your issue is covered, email us a photo and description — we'll tell you straight.

How do I contact you to start a warranty or repair claim?

Email info@iron-ethos.com with the following:

  1. Your name and original order number
  2. A description of the issue
  3. Clear photos of the affected area

We respond within 1 business day. If the claim is approved, we'll send a prepaid return label (for warranty claims) or a return address with shipping instructions (for paid service).

Do not ship knives without prior confirmation. Unauthorized returns may be refused at the carrier.

Do you repair knives purchased from third-party sellers?

Warranty service is available only for knives purchased directly through iron-ethos.com. Knives purchased through third-party retailers are subject to those retailers' own return and warranty policies.

Paid repair service (sharpening, hardware replacement, refinishing) is available for all Iron Ethos knives regardless of where they were purchased. Contact us to discuss.

For any question not covered here, reach us at service@iron-ethos.com. We aim to respond within 1–2 business days.
